Commissioning
a landscape painting
After agreeing the type and form
of the painting, I will prepare the materials for
the painting and fit in dates to paint on site, which
will be influenced by weather and availability of
access.

When I go out painting, I try
to keep a fresh eye and avoid routine. I find studio
work tends to end up dull;
what often happens with painting on the spot, is that
things come about that are absolutely right and have
to be included. I’m looking for strong composition
and expressive accents, along with observed colour
values. I like that feeling of the present moment being
unique.
There is some ancient mental stirring in the switching
between two and three dimensions and back, which
probably gives mimetic art most of its appeal.
A lot of what interests me is to do with contrast,
I like the idea of the ordinary in an extraordinary
light; transformation of perception.
We would need to discuss framing after the picture
is finished, and I would include a later visit to
varnish the picture if it’s an oil painting.
Where a lot of travel is involved, the costs will
be higher.
